I started with the idea of making a tote bag inspired by Kentucky’s crazy quilting culture. I repurposed the life of fabric scraps and an old part of a parachute bag. My prof gave me this parachute piece from the back of the studio’s closet, initially just for the straps, but I had an idea to use the liner and buttons already on the bag and redesign it. I was so excited to use it as I was unseaming the parachute bag? pad? as I walked to my next class. When opening the green pad It had an old, yellow, crumbly foam. I looked up If it could be asbestos. Apparently, asbestos are more white so I’m good. Hopefully This parachute piece is from the Vietnam War and belonged to Greg McKenzie. Although I initially forgot to patch on his printed name, I did so later on to honor him.
